Essence 40th Anniversary 40 Fierce & Fabulous Woman Who Are Changing The World

With a cover that boast the legendary fashion icon IMAN, super models Naomi Campbell and Liya Kebede on platinum it was evident that Essence magazine had something to celebrate.
Essence stands tall above all other lifestyle magazines with class and grace, 40 Fierce & Fabulous! It’s hard to believe Essence has been around for four decades and has in no way lost her trail blazing stride.
Since 1970 Essence has been a permanent fixture packed full of the latest; news, fashion, beauty, health, financial advice, relationship, spiritual, career and confidence building articles. Promoting being the best woman you can be with grace, style, confidence all while turning heads of course.
This month Essence celebrates 40 successful black women who are changing the world and are inspiring others to follow their lead. Not just in entertainment but in medical and political fields, proving Yes you can have and do it all! This article displays such women as;
Dr. Maya Angelou, legendary author and activist known for speaking straight to the core of women around the world in a voice that commands your soul to listen with a timeless hand. With literature such as; I Know Why the Cage Bird Sings, All God’s Children Need Travelling Shoes and Letters to My Daughter.
Jaudith Jamison, legendary dancer and Artistic Director of the prestigious Alvin Aily American Dance Theatre. Jamison together with Alvin Aily created some of dance most noted works such as the 1971 tribute too black women “Cry”.
Oprah Winfrey (Media mogul, philanthropist)…… Oprah (that’s all that needs to be said)
Serna Williams (Athlete) Winner of 27 grand slams, current #1 singles and doubles player with her sister Venus. Serna is currently focused on building a third Serna Williams secondary school in South Africa.
Alicia Keys (Singer, Musician, Actress, Writer, philanthropist) not just a musical master mind and my personal favourite artist, the 12 time Gammy award winner uses her public figure to head her origination “Keep a Child Alive”. KCA has raised over £18 million for children and families in Africa affected by AIDS. The money raised provides the vital medication need to “Keep A Child Alive” while spreading the massage of continuing the fight against AIDS as a global community.
BeyoncĂ© (Singer, Actress) is one of the most talent entertainers of our generation. Her vocal’s and stage presence gives her the power to have audiences all over the globe in the palm of her hand. Don’t get fooled, she means business, as the highest paid female entertainer this side of the galaxy with a talent worth every penny, she is a shewed business woman. One of Beyonce’s goals is to be the first black woman to have a Grammy (she already has 16) an Oscar and a Tony if her dive is anything to go by then she might just achieve this.
Other top 40 fierce and fabulous include; Viola Davis (Oscar Nominated Actress), Political figure Susan Rice (U.S ambassador to the United Nations) ,DJ Beverly Bond (founder of Black Girls Rock!), Susan L. Taylor (Author, Former Editor-in-chief of Essence), Roslyn Brock (Chairman of the board NAACP), Sheryl Lee Ralph (Actress, HIV activist), Cicely Tyson (Legendary Actress)
Last but certainly not lest the article is toped of with a letter from The First Lady herself Michelle Obama, she writes about the importance of success, reaching out and helping others and having confidence in yourself to believe you deserve the best.
(Read more of Michelle Obama’s letter in this months Essence that is on stands now)

TheVinylBox on Melanie Fiona......

Season 2 of BET Rising Icons featured Grammy Nominated Singer/Song Writer Melanie Fiona. In 2009 Guyanese Canadian born singer released her debut LP “The Bridge” with Motown/SRC/Title9 to critical acclaim. To the enjoyment of real music lover’s everywhere, helping bring back the long lost art of real vocalist and honest no hold lyrics. It produced hit’s such as “Give It To Me Right” and “It Kills Me” that held the #1 spot on Billboards R’n’B charts for 10 weeks.
This isn’t the first time Melanie has been featured in BET’s Rising Icons, this is her second year running and is the only artist that has been asked back for a second season. This season Melanie shares songs from “The Bridge” including Monday Morning, Give It To Me Right, It Kills Me and Somebody Come Get Me (which was featured the Reggae Gold). Melanie strips down her songs down and shares some of the life experiences that inspired album baring her purple heart. During her acoustic version on “It Kills Me” she shows of her vocals and passion she portrays through her music in a story that anyone who has been in love and lost love can relate to.
Every song on “The Bridge” provides a different musical style with a track to fit everybody providing a blend between genres; Melanie’s next LP could go in any direction. With influences that list Sam Cook, Roberta Flack, Whitney Houston proves she’s invested in the quality of her music and a co-sign from Stevie Wonder shows the Grammy Nominated Vocalist is here to stay.
Any time you get a chance to see Melanie Fiona live it’s a show not too miss. I had the pressure to see Melanie live and meet her at the Jazz Cafe London this past July (shout out ThatGrapeJuice.com and @MelonHeads). The venue was packed with an audience that included Tinchy stryder, Lovers Rock Singer Janet Kay and a crowed that sung along to every word with Melanie whose voice sounded better Live than on CD. She also made in clear that she was a west Indian Woman with her performance of “Somebody Come Get Me (before I kill this man)”.
Melanie has just released an Acoustic EP “The Bridge (Acoustic) – EP” that is available on itunes and Amazon now, her album “The Bridge” should already be in your collection. Melanie is currently in the studio working on her second album “The MF Life” that is set to be released in 2011.
